The most current news that I've seen, heard or read about My Bruce Springsteen:
August 27, 2010:It was on August 25, 1975 that the definitive album from My Bruce Springsteen was released and as the Boss has been known to say many times over, it was bye bye...New Jersey 'cause baby we were Born To Run. So we have a milestone album anniversary and if you want to read more about the album that one of rocks greatest stars described as "the worst piece of garbage I'd ever heard" than click for this link to the New York Post article that was written by Larry Getlen. And you can click here for another article that is posted on the same topic by blogger James Sullivan that is a good read with pictures and a video link to vintage Jungleland circa 77 in Passaic featuring a blistering Miami Steve solo. look for a full breathed Clarence and Bruce in a wife beater backed by a full powered and top of their game E Street Band! Speaking of dates, how about November 16 2010 as the finally coming to light Darkness On The Edge Of Town reissue package? I got an email alert from the official Bruce Springsteen site (www.brucespringsteen.net) this week with details about "The Promise: The Darkness On The Edge Of Town Story". Sounds good to me, by then there will already have been leaks and advances bouncing around and perhaps already some film festival awards (TIFF?) too. There's already an advance of the first new / old song, titled Save My Love so check out the Boss' site for that. If you want to read a really good article by Greg Kot, than click here for the Chicago Tribune story. Or maybe the blog from Stan Goldstein for some great fan insight on this reissue of previously unreleased songs from the DOTEOT sessions. Some choice song titles include some familiar live favorites highlighted below: Gotta Get That Feeling If you want to read a few more articles about this reissue or the live video and audio recordings as well as to view some pictures of Bruce than click the following links to: Rolling Stone / CNN Toronto CBC News picture Toronto Star pictures Baltimore Sun picture
Finally, I get emails now and then about the YouTube boots posted from the Elvis Costello Spectacle TV show late last year. So what? Well only that this past week was Declan McManus' birthday so here are a few of the more frequently viewed songs that Bruce and Elvis performed not all that long ago: Radio Silence Wild Billy's Circus Story Some sad news out of Jersey too as a man by the name of Phillip Petillo passed away recently. In fact Mr. Petillo looms largely in the Boss legend as he was the guy who sold and customized Bruce's iconic Fender Esquire guitar for him. Click here for the link to read more about Mr. Petillo in the Asbury Park Press. August 20, 2010:2 years ago today I was on my way back home to Long Island after seeing My Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band at the Hershey Park Stadium...out in Hershey, Pennsylvania. With that anniversary in mind, here is my review of that sweet, sweet night out in PA: August 20, 2008:Man oh man I am so glad that I drove 4 plus hours to get to Hershey last night....because we got 3 tour debuts along with special guests and a beautiful summer night with the full moon. Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band performed in their backyard of PA, with a healthy dose of Jersey Girls and NYC boys in attendance too. I was a late arrival but could hear the band come out and say Hello with a stadium shaking Summertime Blues. I made it to my seat by the time Out In The Street wrapped and for the start of "Do You Feel The" Spirit In The Night. There were lots of great request signs so when Steven picked the blues cover of Boom Boom, we hardcore got the first tasty treat of the evening, captured & posted by yours truly up on YouTube. Obscurities, indeed! The next tidbit was a Magic tour mainstay and showstopper early in the tour so I was very pleased when Bruce went with another boogie woogie and dusted off Reason To Believe, also to be posted on YouTube. The next debut was clearly "yea, mon" licks rarely heard from Bruce's Fender, making me at first think that he was heading back to the Rainbow Room in '73 to cover Bob Marley. But no, this was a song that he said "we don't know this one", which when I realized they were performing Part Man, Part Monkey led me to think 'twas a world premiere. Wrongo, I must have had too much fun during TOL & D&D shows to remember but won't forget last night because you can click here to see the video up on YouTube.
The last tour debut of the night was also the last number played so the folks who started for the parking lot early missed the Grusheky Brothers coming out to perform G L O R I A, which Bruce said something along the lines of the song being "where it all started". Damn, I should have saved more disk space but somebody must have gotten this on video?? By the way, this was an extended encore set of 8 songs and for a minute, when there was a pause after Jungleland I wondered what was being plugged in before B2R, yay it was Seven Nights To Rock! Well, I've got a long ride back to NY, come back tomorrow for links to the remaining videos that I'll be posting to the Tube. Click here for the delicious Hershey Park set list. August 13, 2010:A gym sighting of My Bruce Springsteen was posted on Facebook this week by my friend Audrey who lives in a Jersey...community known for more than occasional Boss sightings. No surprise that Audrey reports Bruce in tip top shape, lifting weights early this past Monday morning. And of course, there was no shortage of comments from a number of friends such as "how's he look?, is his ass still tight?, did'ja say Hi?".... In recognition of Audrey's pumped up sighting, here are some YouTube video links Hartford April 2009 show I attended. At some point in the show, the Boss got all frisky and tore the sleeves off of his tee shirt. We in the audience were quite delighted with the Buff Bruce. August 6, 2010:The word for many many months now out of My Bruce Springsteen about the special package release of Darkness On The Edge Of Town...was to expect the drop in September of this year. Well that appears to be on track and in tandem with a movie about that highly acclaimed album. The film is documentary style and was made by Thom Zimny. The movie will première at the Toronto International Film Festival and is titled The Promise: The Making of Darkness On The Edge Of Town. Cool Boss, cool! And as is often the cased in a slow news week, to the way back machine for a look at tomorrows 8th anniversary of the first full show in New Jersey that showcased The Rising:
The album had been released early in the summer and was initially supported with a flood of Bruce interviews in the press and on TV, including interviews on the Today show and Charley Rose.
Due to the serious nature of 9/11 imagery that permeates the album, I recall the grim game face that Bruce displayed throughout almost the entire 2 and a half hour performance in front of his hometown crowd. The show included 10 of the new albums 14 songs and each of these songs resonated deeply with the “close to the edge” emotions of the audience. Be reminded that the first anniversary of 9/11 had not yet passed and the ruins of the World Trade Center had only recently ceased what seemed to be a never ending smoldering.
The lightest moment of this heavy evening was the clear delight that Bruce had on his face as the entire audience sang the full chorus to “Waitin’ On a Sunny Day”, one of the few truly up tempo songs on the album. The album was barely a month old but clearly everybody in this audience was familiar enough with the material to bring the first of few smiles to the bands collective face.
